Petak Umpet Minako is an Indonesian movie based on Indonesian best selling survival horror novel. The story is about young people who held a school reunion and plays a highly known Japanese hide and seek alone Hitori Kakurenbo. Hitori Kakurenbo requires a doll for the medium for the spirit to possessed who who will turn as the seeker. When the spirit comes, everybody runs for their life not only chased by the doll but also their haunting past life. The spirit that possessed the doll named Minako. Minako chase all the participant of the game and take their soul. As Minako collects more souls it gradually turns into a perfect form.
I’m an Indonesian director who grows with Japanese cultures and admires how Japanese forms their cultures into a popular culture for their young generation. Not even for the Japanese, but also internationally. As I wrote the script the characterization of the characters is very manga-like character design. The way the actors acts in someway is unrealistic, because I want to get the feel of an manga or anime feeling, I intentionally design it. As people who grows with manga, anime and japanese cultures, I want to made everything visually remind the spectator about Japan, not only the design of the ghost.
The process of making the ghost as creature that have 5 designs as it grows stronger is never mentioned in the novel specifically. So I have to think about it again, to design it. I did visual research for the doll, and decided that I will use Japanese ichimatsu doll for the movie and starts from there for the grand design of the creature. I combined with Japanese bunraku theatrical movement and facial expression change feature for Minako’s design.The famous Noh mask, the elegant of a geisha, is included as part of Minako’s design. I also think the final form for Minako is more into elegant and creepy rather than scary creature. This the decision that me and my producers agreed about bringing the terror to the spectator.
For me, personally filmmaking is never been fun, to includes creature design as in my previous work Tuyul Part 1, the first time I took the step for Indonesian cinema with creature design that is very rare for Indonesian cinema.
